Robert W. Craig

From outstanding high school and college athlete, to armed services all star, to Olympic finalist and then accomplished coach, Bob “Coach” Craig excelled at everything he tried. In high school he won the State Championship, winning eight medals in parallel bars and tumbling. He also succeeded in track and field and was named one of the Outstanding Athletes in the Class of 1949.

While a student at Lock Haven University, he lettered in five sports with 18 varsity letters earned. He participated in gymnastics, football, wrestling, swimming and track and field. He graduated with a BS in Health and Physical Education then went on to earn his Masters in Education from Penn State.

He began his coaching career in 1956 and amassed an impressive winning record in football and wrestling. Coach Craig is the midstate’s all-time leader in football victories and 13th all-time in PA. In addition to winning numerous state tournaments and championships, he coached the Big33 three times.

Coach Craig was inducted into many Halls of Fame including Pottsville High School Sports Hall of Fame, Lock Haven University Wrestling Hall of Fame and Football Hall of Fame, Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame, and Pennsylvania Wrestling Coaches Hall of Fame.

Coach Craig is remembered for being an intense competitor with a fierce love of sports and dedication to shaping young boys into successful young men. His big heart and legacy live on through the Bob Craig Youth Foundation.
